There’s nothing quite like a piping hot, freshly cooked lunch on a chilly winter’s day. Luckily for us, and our tenants, The Kitchen have put down roots on the ground floor of our Steward Street Business Lofts.
Serving hot dishes of the day with great vegetarian options as well as drinks and sweet treats, the team are committed to providing UrbanWorkSpace tenants and our neighbours with top quality seasonal food.
We sat down with the owner, Mal, to learn a little bit more about The Kitchen and how their opening week has gone.
Hi Mal, how was your first week at UrbanWorkSpace?
It was absolutely mad, in a good way of course! The whole family have been over helping to set everything up. We’re very excited to be up and running.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your business?
We actually started off as a catering company, delivering fresh, healthy meals to schools. We loved it, but had always wanted to expand our family business and open up a coffee shop – which led us to find UrbanWorkSpace.
What makes The Kitchen unique?
We’re a family run business, we really care about giving people a warm and welcoming experience. Supporting our community is also a big deal to us so we’re all about sourcing local, seasonal, great quality ingredients to really give you a true taste of Birmingham.
How did you come up with the name?
We kept referring to the coffee shop as “The Kitchen” in lieu of a name while we were still in planning stages and it sort of stuck! It’s really fitting actually because in our home the kitchen was always the heart of the house.
All big decisions and events always took place around the kitchen, we think that’s probably the case for a lot of families and we wanted to create a familiar atmosphere here. Really, that’s what we wanted to become for the UrbanWorkSpace family – the hub of their “home” where tenants can come for a break from work.
Why did you choose UrbanWorkSpace?
We just fell in love with the space and location initially. The team were more than happy to go along with our plans and even let us expand the kitchen out.
We like the business buzz around here – quite literally because of the bee hives on the rooftop! One of the first things they did when we signed up was give us a jar of their local honey, which was great for us since we strive to use local ingredients in our cooking.
What do you like best about being an UrbanWorkSpace tenant?
We love how friendly it is here, you really feel like you’re part of the wider network. The fact that tenants regularly help other tenants just really makes you feel like a part of the family. We also have to say that we love seeing the owner, Gerry, around the place so much – we really get that personal touch that you just don’t get in other spaces.
That’s what we like to hear! What are your plans for future?
We would love to expand and have a couple of different locations, perhaps to the other UrbanWorkSpace offices – who knows! We definitely see our relationship with UrbanWorkSpace growing, so watch this space.
Make sure you head on down to The Kitchen for tenant offers, happy hours and other exclusive UrbanWorkSpace offers.
